History...........
The Historic Como Hotel traded beside Scylla Bay for over 100 years before it was destroyed by fire in 1996.
It began it's life as a club for German rail workers before becoming a hotel.
Holiday makers & regular drinkers rowed up the Scylla Bay to the hotel.
With easier access granted by the railway, Como was subdivided into residential land. That & rising car ownership saw the end of Como as a holiday destination by the early 1920's.
Scylla Bay was reclaimed as part of a public works program during the depression.
The hotel was heritage listed, and is a much loved icon.
The Historic Como Hotel survived the 1994 bushfires only to fall to it's demise in 1996 resulting from an electrical fault fire.
The hotel was re-built between 2000 and 2001. As it was listed as a heritage site the hotel had to comply with many guidelines. While re-building the hotel the main condition was that the hotel had to be re-built as it was before it burnt down.
The Historic Como Hotel stands today, re-built almost exactly the same as the old hotel.....
